Tountinna Loop Hike

Located between Portroe and Ballina, close by to Millennium Cross hike, this loop hike has some amazing views of Lough Derg. Along the way you get to pass by Graves of Leinstermen at the base of the hike where the folklore story goes that the High King of Ireland, Brian Boru, ambushed and killed the King of Leinster along with his contingent of soldiers. On top of the peak you also have the wonderful looking Black Lough.

    Trail: Gravel trail for 1.5km and normal road for rest

  • Sunset
    The sun sets across Lough Derg with some stunning colour displays in the sky.

    • Start at the entrance to the trail

    • Continue straight along the steep, narrow, gravel trail for 1.5km until you reach the tower stations on top.

    • Follow the road down for about 2km till you come to a T-Junction

    • Turn right and follow the road for 1.5km until you meet a Y junction.

    • Take the sharp right and walk 1km back to the car park

    • Stones at Graves of Leinstermen

    • Black Lough

    • Views of Ballina/Killaloe on clear days
